A runny nose, headache, body pain, and all you want to do is snuggle with your blanket. Well, there are chances that you are suffering from the common cold. It is a viral infection that affects your nose and throat. This is so common that, on average, a person suffers from the common cold at least a couple of times a year. Children can have it more often than adults. To be frank, the common cold is not harmful. But when you are suffering from it, you will agree to disagree. The most common symptoms that you will suffer from are a runny or stuffy nose, cough, sneezing, and a mild fever. For the common cold, you do not need medication as you will get better in a week or two. But if the symptoms are severe, then you must go to a doctor or take medicines. People who smoke will have symptoms for a longer duration. Though it is not harmful, who wants to suffer during those weeks? So it is better to take preventive measures in advance. These preventive steps are easy and you can follow them without any problem.

Cold vs Flu

As much as both the cold and the flu are similar, they are equally different. Both these infections are respiratory diseases. Even their initial symptoms are similar. So it may be hard to differentiate between both. But as the infection progresses, you may see some different symptoms. The biggest difference is how severe the symptoms are. Flu can also lead to other health issues such as sinusitis, pneumonia, and so on. For the common cold, you do not need medical treatment, but if it is the flu, you must take treatment. The doctor will recommend some tests to decide which of the two you have.

Symptoms of Common Cold

Suffering from cold is common in the winter and spring seasons. But it is not the case, you can have a cold at any time of the year. These symptoms will most likely be seen in the nose and throat like:

  • A runny or stuffy nose,
  • Throat pain,
  • Coughing,
  • Sneezing,
  • Headache,
  • The body aches, and
  • Mild fever.

In all, you will feel weak and want to stay in your bed. If you have these symptoms, take a rest and keep hydrated. This will only help you feel better. There are not any specific medicines for the common cold. Doctors recommend antibiotics, paracetamol, and vitamins. But they are not useful. So all you can do is lay easy for a week or 10 days. Later, you will find yourself all fit and fine.

Preventive tips

If you have suffered from the common cold, you will agree that it is better to stay away from it. But how will you do that? Follow a few easy precautions and you will not catch a common cold.

  • Start by washing your hands after coming home or receiving delivery. Clean hands will not spread the infection to you.
  • Avoid touching your face without washing your hands, especially not in public places.
  • Maintain a healthy routine. Proper sleep, a healthy diet, and exercise will improve your immunity and lower the chances of infection.
  • Practice respiratory exercise. This will improve your lungs’ health and will reduce the chances of respiratory diseases.
  • If someone close to you is suffering from the cold, try to maintain a distance from them.  Keep household surfaces clean, as germs can settle there.
  • Try to reduce your stress. People who are under stress have a weak immune system. Therefore, you will catch a cold easily.
  • Avoid smoking, as it will increase the severity of the cold. Even passive smoking will have similar effects.

Eat to treat

Having a good immunity system is the best way to tackle the common cold. It will keep you from suffering from any diseases. A person must have a healthy immune system to be a healthy person. Proper diet, exercise, and breathing practice will help you improve your immunity. Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C are the best way of preventing the common cold or flu. Many studies show that people eating vitamin C-rich diets suffer fewer colds, and their severity is also low. So eat a lot of oranges and tomatoes. Add yogurt to your diet. It contains natural probiotics which help improve your immunity. Ginger is good natural medicine for the common cold. So you can have it in tea or candy form. The most important thing is to keep yourself hydrated. So drink an ample amount of water. This will help you as people tend to lose fluids when they are sick.

It is good to be safe:

The unbearable pain and continuous sneezing are quite annoying. As a result, it is always preferable to avoid catching a cold. Avoiding it will protect you as well as the people around you. Following these preventive measures will keep you safe from the common cold. Not only that, but it will also protect you from catching COVID. I mean, you never know. Having good immunity will be a plus point. So eat the above-mentioned food. With good immunity and preventive measures, you are all set to enjoy spring and winter. So who wants to be cooped up on a sofa with a box of tissues, chicken soup, and a runny nose? Still, if you catch a common cold, consult a doctor to get checked. Staying healthy is better than having a cough and fever.
