Traditional occupational health and safety procedures address asymmetrical interactions. Clients and providers must follow them when the provider is responsible for providing a safe environment for the client. The nature of the adult and porn industry, however, is different because it protects performers from each other. It is most of all regulating symmetrical relationships. In the porn industry, mental, physical, and sexual trauma are all interconnected. Workers of the porn industry engage in several sexual activities with multiple sexual partners over short periods of time. These conditions create a perfect breeding ground for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

The adult industry is rife with controversies

There was a controversy surrounding the adult and porn industry in 2016. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) voted on new rules. The new rules require actors to use condoms, dental dams, and even eye protection on set. According to adult film executives, new rules could threaten and force the business out of the state. According to the proposed regulation, producers had to pay for medical visits for performers. They also had to offer vaccines against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and HPV. They need to test performers for sexually transmitted infections every three months.

But later, the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health’s Standards Board voted the measure down because only three members supported it, Cal/Osha spokesperson Julia Bernstein said. To pass, four of the board’s seven members had to vote yes. Three members voted in favor, one member was absent, and one board seat was vacant. Therefore, the porn industry workers are no longer in a need to wear condoms, dental dams, and eye protectors.

Know the risks and treat your health right

  • Insane over drugs- Many performers say that the industry is prone to drug and alcohol abuse. Some workers entered the industry with a drug problem and utilized the money to support their addiction. Some developed it because of their social networks. Whereas, the rest of them started it to cope up with the stress and stigma. Female workers are more likely to use alcohol and drugs while performing. If not given drugs, they will break down mentally.
  • Closer to HIV and STDs- In today’s time, the adult film industry is worth billions of dollars. Also, it is well known that adult performers have a few health hazards. HIV, hepatitis, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, herpes, and HPV are among the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Despite regular follow-up, the prevalence of STDs remains high in this high-risk community. This situation persists because a large segment of the industry is rejecting the use of condoms consistently.
  • Body enhancement does not build confidence every time- Body enhancement comes in a variety of types. Female actors are more likely to have undergone breast augmentation surgery. Many female performers do have breast implants. But they still undergo excessive breast augmentations to boost their employment or their longevity. Furthermore, when it comes to men, they often must take Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis for erection. Occasionally, they inject Trimix into their penis if none of the above works.

Struggle in silence

Several mental health problems are common among industry performers. These include depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide, and bipolar disorder. Some Porn stars claim that the industry wants to make women so broken that they can no longer feel anything. Even men in the industry are broken because they lack regular life. They are lonely and cannot have normal girlfriends. Also, they cannot socialize with their identity. Feeling this way makes them want to commit suicide.

Choose Safety over profits

Utilizing condoms correctly can reduce the risk of infection to others. Also, there is a need to increase hygienic practices. In most cases, Hepatitis A is transmitted by ingesting feces from an infected person. Using strict hygiene habits to keep feces from coming into touch with a person’s mouth can help them avoid infection. Vaccination, on the other hand, is the most effective way to prevent hepatitis A infection in people who are at risk. HIV-positive people can use antiviral drugs to reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of infecting their partners.

According to Cal/OSHA, employers must offer the hepatitis B vaccination to their employees. Especially to those, who may encounter blood, semen, or vaginal discharge of others. Also, it is essential for employers to keep their employees’ medical records confidential. The employer should train employees at least annually about bloodborne pathogens. Instruction should include the employer’s exposure plan and what the employee should do in the event of exposure.

Treat them like humans, not toys

Cal/OSHA voted a new set of rules in 2016, which forbid actors from exposing themselves to sexually transmitted diseases or using eye protection on set. But, the industry workers did not like the idea. The industry breaks down people to the worst extent. But, now is the time to address the issue. There is a need to acknowledge that they go through a hell of a lot of problems. From depression to suicide, they have seen it all. Now, employers need to work on their safety. They need to provide them with condoms and other necessary medical treatments. They need to ensure strict hygiene habits to make them feel safe and reduce their risks of pain.
