Why It’s Important to Talk Openly About Mental Health Stigma?

Mental illness can strike anyone! It knows no age, race, economic status, color, or creed. More than 54 million people across the globe are affected by one or more mental health disorders during a year. But then why is the Mental Health Stigma still exists?

Mental disorders affect everyone, irrespective of age, gender, residence, and living standards, though some groups may be at a higher risk. They are caused by a complex interaction of biological, environmental, social, cultural, and economic factors, all of which affect the susceptibility to mental disorders and the chances of recovery from them.

Common mental illness symptoms include 

  • Constant negative thoughts
  • Including a preoccupation with death or suicide,
  • Difficulty in concentrating,
  • Tiredness, low energy or severely fluctuating energy levels,
  • The feeling of worthlessness or excessive guilt,
  • Hearing voices,
  • Social withdrawal,
  • Wanting to spend excessive amounts of time alone,
  • Inappropriate behavior,
  • Including extreme anger or sadness,

Why it is essential to talk openly About Mental Health

As a part of our mental health programs in South Florida, we work with patients that are all too often afraid to speak about their mental health disorders outside of treatment. Because of this, we want people to know the benefits of talking about mental health and encourage people to speak openly about mental health.

Remove the Stigma- Lets support

 By talking about mental illness on a more regular basis, we as a society will hopefully expose the false notions that plague this topic. When these myths are debunked, it should help eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health.

Mental Health Disorders are Growing

The prevalence of some mental health disorders has risen in the past few decades. One study found that the occurrences of Major Depressive Episode in the youth have increased from 11.93% to 12.63% in one year. As more people are affected by these issues, it just proves that you are no extensive alone in your struggles, and talking about mental health should be more acceptable.

Promote Treatment & Decrease Rate of Suicides

Of the numerous reasons we need to talk about mental health, this is arguably the most important. Because mental health is so taboo, too many people are not attainment the treatment they need. In turn, their unfortunate mental health could lead to suicide. One research study found that over 90% of people who commit suicide had signs of a mental health disorder.

Open dialogue about mental health can help everybody heal. People don’t realize that there are many ways to treat mental illness effectively. You can live a normal lifestyle by learning how to manage your mental health disorder symptoms properly. The state of your mental health affects how you think, feel, and, eventually, how you act. We must express these emotions with others daily.
